New Patterns of Prototyping

New Patterns of Prototyping

This recent article by Michael Johansson & Andreas Siess presented on the Eksig2023 Conference in Milan, Italy,  delves into the initial phase of prototype-based design investigations in visual and interactive computing, emphasizing an artistic and design-oriented perspective. We introduce a new interaction paradigm called “probing,” distinct from traditional prototyping methods. Through an actual prototype, we demonstrate the significance of embracing quirks and limitations, which can enhance design with unique qualities. We present a model that systematizes creative work with prototypes, forming an epistemological typology. These insights and concepts can be applied to prototype-based design and development more broadly.
