TALK ON FRANK BOWLING, FLORA LOUGHRIDGE. TATE GUIDES INDEPENDENT ART GROUP, TATE MODERN, LONDON

Guyana-born British artist Frank Bowling has always rejected the idea that ‘artists who happen to be black’ should be making overtly political or protest art. He has openly defended artists engaged in abstraction, with his own work reflecting his long-term interest in colour, innovation and experimentation. This talk will trace the developments in Bowling’s career – from figuration to pure abstraction – in an attempt to better understand his unique style of painting, which draws on both abstraction and his Guyanese heritage.
