The Heavenly City and Paradise
A heavenly city is not really about the city, but about paradise. “Paradise” can take many forms. Traditionally, it can be a city, a garden, or a combination of both, and the idea of a paradise, as an inner image, is connected with religious belief.
But one does not necessarily have to be religious in a traditional sense to long for paradise. Paradise can also be a utopia destined to be built by human effort alone, or a paradisiacal natural state of existence which we hope to reach again. In our times of crisis, images of paradise may lead to hope and dialogue – this is the very aim of our exhibition.
